Using this information, the following car can either mimic the lead car’s behavior (for example, steer in the same direction) or react to information (for example, activate its brakes if the lead car is going to stop). To increase the system’s robustness, both cars operate cooperatively, transmitting information regarding their state, the lead-car driver’s intentions, and any anomalous states of the second car. For this, the cars incorporate standard intelligent transportation systems technology and the latest in European satellite positioning and location technology.

Intelligent behaviors for a convoy of indoor mobile robots operating in unknown environments

Intelligent behaviors allow a convoy of small indoor robots to perform high-level mission tasking. These behaviors include various implementations of map building, localization, obstacle avoidance, object recognition, and navigation. Several behaviors have been developed by SSC San Diego, with integration of other behaviors developed by opensource projects and a technology transfer effort funde...

A study of collaborative influence mechanisms for highway convoy driving

Convoy driving on highways is a desirable behavior which reduces the risk of highway accidents and makes traffic faster and more fluent. Recent technologies, such as intelligent cruise control devices explicitly facilitate convoy driving by providing a fully automated means for following the previous vehicle. Participating in a convoy, however, requires compromises from the vehicles, such as sl...

Enhancing GNSS Positioning with 3D Mapping

The number of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) signals that can be received in dense urban areas has increased through the availability of multiple satellite constellations and high sensitivity receivers. However, in these constrained environments, the blockage and reflection of many of the signals by buildings and other obstacles means that poor positioning accuracy remains a problem...

A Doppler-based motion controller for an echolocating mobile robot

From the study of biological acoustic sensorimotor systems it can be seen that Doppler is a rich source of information which is not exploited by commercial ultrasonic range sensors such as the Polaroid. In this work we present a simple collision detection and convoy controller for RoBat, a mobile robot provided with a biomimetic sonarhead, based on the presence or absence of Doppler shifts in t...

Peer-to-Peer Distance Measurement among Intelligent Vehicles in a Battlefield

Applications of unmanned vehicles can increase combat effectiveness and personnel safety. These include reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, logistics, minefield and other obstacle detection, explosive disposal, physical security, and operations in contaminated environments. Better communication and GPS technologies are necessary for a convoy of unmanned vehicles to accurately foll...
